Forest Floor
The duality of waste and the emergence of new, beautiful things from within.
About the series
Inverting “Spring Awakening” and moving into fall, “Forest Floor” celebrates the beauty of decomposition and the energy it sustains.
This exploration delves into the layering of glaze materials, mirroring the forest floor’s structure from the litter layer to the rhizosphere and root layer. The piece playfully examines decomposition through the ebb and flow of various glazes, reflecting moss, humus, and lichen.
These pieces explore the use of bisque discards, scrap wire, and grog to evoke the sensation of new life on the forest floor. By layering various glazes, underglazes with oxide washes, and employing mark-making techniques, the work aims to capture the energy both above and below ground.
